إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156

When a Muslim dies in North Dakota

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What North Dakota law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director collects the facts of death from the next of kin and files them through the state's electronic death registration system within three days after taking custody of the body. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. N.D.C.C. § 23-02.1-19
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from North Dakota Health and Human Services, Division of Vital Records; the state office has some records since 1893, and your request must include a photocopy of your government-issued ID. Ask the funeral home how many certified copies you are likely to need before you order. Where to Write for Vital Records: North Dakota
Objecting to an autopsy
We found no North Dakota statute that lets a family refuse an autopsy on religious grounds. If a medical examiner or coroner is involved, tell that office about your religious objection as early as possible and ask what can be done. N.D.C.C. chapter 11-19.1 (county coroner)
Small estates
In North Dakota, a person who is owed property can collect it with an affidavit when the whole estate is $100,000 or less, 30 days have passed since the death, and no personal representative has been requested. Ask the district court clerk or an attorney if you are unsure whether it applies. N.D.C.C. § 30.1-23-01

From official North Dakota sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
