Life Is Temporary A death has occurred

If you are grieving

Grief is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith. When his son Ibrāhīm was dying, the Prophet ﷺ wept. Told “even you are weeping?”, he said: “This is mercy… The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, and we say only what pleases our Lord.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1303

Patience (ṣabr) is not the absence of tears. Allah does not punish for tears or for sorrow of the heart (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1304); what the Prophet ﷺ warned against is wailing over the dead. Mourning has a limit as well as a permission: three days is the norm, and a widow observes four months and ten days (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1280; Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:234). Beyond that, you may still miss them and still ask for help. Scholars explain the details of that warning differently, so ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.
