إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Michigan
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- A licensed funeral director files the death record with the local registrar within 72 hours after the death, and the doctor completes the medical certification within 48 hours. Ask the funeral home to confirm it has been filed. MCL 333.2843
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death records are issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Vital Records (P.O. Box 30721, Lansing, MI 48909, phone 517-335-8666); Michigan death records are not restricted. Ask the funeral home how many copies you may need. CDC NCHS Where to Write for Vital Records - Michigan
- Objecting to an autopsy
- We found no Michigan statute that gives a family the right to refuse a medical examiner's autopsy on religious grounds; the autopsy consent rules in MCL 333.2855 cover cases outside the medical examiner. If you object for religious reasons, tell the county medical examiner as early as you can. MCL 333.2855
- Small estates
- If more than 28 days have passed since the death, there is no real estate, and no personal representative has been appointed, an heir or devisee can collect certain assets with a sworn affidavit when the estate (after liens) is within a limit the court form lists as $50,000, adjusted every year for inflation. Ask the county probate court for this year's adjusted figure. MCL 700.3983; MCL 700.1210; Form PC 598 (4/24)
