إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Maryland
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Embalming and refrigeration
- Maryland law does not require embalming; a body may not be embalmed without permission from the person arranging the funeral or a court order. If an unembalmed body is held more than 48 hours before burial, the funeral home must keep it refrigerated. Md. Code, Health-General § 5-513
- Objecting to an autopsy
- If the family objects to an autopsy on religious grounds, it may not be performed unless the Chief Medical Examiner or a designee authorizes it. Tell the medical examiner's office about your objection as early as possible. Md. Code, Health-General § 5-309
- Small estates
- Maryland has a simplified small-estate process when the property going through the estate is worth $50,000 or less, or $100,000 or less when the surviving spouse is the only heir or beneficiary. Ask the Register of Wills in the county where the person lived about filing. Md. Code, Estates and Trusts § 5-601
