إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Maine
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.
Find a number- Death certificate filing
- The funeral director or other person in charge of the disposition files the death certificate with the State Registrar or the municipal clerk, within a period set by state health department rule and before the body leaves Maine. Ask the funeral home to confirm it has been filed. 22 M.R.S. 2842
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified death certificates come from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Vital Records in Augusta, or from the municipal clerk where the death happened. Requests need photo ID and proof of your connection to the person; the funeral home can usually order copies for you. Where to Write for Vital Records: Maine
- Embalming and refrigeration
- Maine does not require embalming, but a body shipped by common carrier must be embalmed or in a sealed case, and the law bars embalming in a medical examiner case until the body is released. Ask the funeral home about refrigeration if there will be a delay. Funeral Consumers Alliance, Maine; 32 M.R.S. 1404
- Objecting to an autopsy
- Maine's medical examiner law has no religious-objection provision; the medical examiner or Chief Medical Examiner decides when an autopsy is advisable and in the public interest. If you object for religious reasons, tell the medical examiner's office as early as you can. 22 M.R.S. 3028
- Small estates
- If the whole estate, after liens, is $40,000 or less (adjusted for inflation), a successor can collect personal property with an affidavit 30 days after the death, as long as no personal representative has been appointed. The county probate court publishes the current adjusted figure each year. 18-C M.R.S. 3-1201
