إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

When a Muslim dies in Georgia

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What Georgia law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director who first takes custody of the body files the death report within three calendar days after death, and the cause of death is normally certified within the same three days. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 511-1-3-.19 (Reporting of Deaths)
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from the Georgia Department of Public Health, Office of Vital Records, which takes orders online for close family and others with a legal interest. The funeral home can usually order copies for you. How do I order Georgia birth and death records online?
Objecting to an autopsy
Georgia's law on coroner and medical examiner inquiries lists the deaths that must be reported and investigated, and it does not give a family a right to refuse an autopsy on religious grounds. Tell the coroner or medical examiner about your objection as early as you can. O.C.G.A. § 45-16-24
Small estates
When there is no will, the heirs can ask the probate court for an order that no administration is necessary, if all heirs agree in writing on how to divide the estate and the debts are paid or the creditors consent. Ask the probate court in the county where the person lived whether this fits your family. O.C.G.A. § 53-2-40 et seq.; Petition for Order Declaring No Administration Necessary (GPCSF 9)

From official Georgia sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
