إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156
When a Muslim dies in Florida
You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.
As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

- Death certificate filing
- The funeral director files the death certificate within 5 days after the death, and the Bureau of Vital Statistics can allow 5 more days to get the doctor's signature. The doctor or medical examiner has 72 hours after receiving it to certify the cause of death. s. 382.008(3), F.S., as summarized in DH Form 150-849
- Ordering death certificates
- Certified copies of a Florida death certificate come from the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, online, by mail, in person in Jacksonville, or through a county health department office. Copies showing the cause of death are limited to close family and others with a legal interest, so ask the funeral home how many copies you will need. - Embalming and refrigeration
- Florida does not require embalming in ordinary cases: a funeral home must keep the body refrigerated at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below starting 24 hours after death unless it has been embalmed. Ask the funeral home for refrigeration and a prompt burial if you do not want embalming. Fla. Admin. Code R. 69K-33.001
- Objecting to an autopsy
- A Florida district medical examiner may order whatever autopsies and laboratory examinations he or she considers necessary and in the public interest in a reportable death, and the statute says nothing about a family's religious objection. Tell the medical examiner's office about your objection as early as you can and ask whether an autopsy is needed. s. 406.11, F.S.
- Small estates
- Florida offers summary administration, a shorter court process, when the estate in Florida (not counting property exempt from creditors) is worth no more than $150,000, or when the person died more than 2 years ago. The limit rose from $75,000 on July 1, 2026; ask the probate court clerk in the county where the person lived about filing. s. 735.201(2), F.S., as amended by ch. 2026-57, Laws of Florida (effective July 1, 2026)
From official Florida sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
