When a Muslim dies in Colorado

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What Colorado law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral director, or the person acting as one, who first takes custody of the body files the death certificate within 72 hours of taking custody and before final disposition. Ask the funeral home to confirm when it has been filed. C.R.S. § 25-2-110
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Vital Records Section, in Denver, with a photocopy of valid photo ID. Ask the funeral home how many copies you will need. Where to Write for Vital Records: Colorado
Objecting to an autopsy
Colorado's coroner law says no autopsy or inquest is required where someone died without medical care solely because they were treated by prayer or spiritual means in a recognized church. We found no statute that lets a family refuse an autopsy on religious grounds in other cases, so tell the coroner about your objection right away. C.R.S. § 30-10-606
Small estates
Ten days after a death, a successor can collect property by affidavit, with no court filing, if the property is worth $88,000 or less for a death in 2026 (the limit is adjusted every year). It cannot be used to transfer real estate. Give the affidavit to whoever holds the property. C.R.S. § 15-12-1201; JDF 999

From official Colorado sources, checked October 2026. Laws change; your funeral home and an estate attorney can confirm them.
