إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn. Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Qurʾān, al-Baqarah 2:156

When a Muslim dies in Arizona

You do not have to do this alone, or all at once. Your masjid has done this many times. Follow the steps in order, and open each one when you reach it.

As soon as you can, call your masjid’s funeral committee. They will arrange the washing, the shroud, the prayer and the burial, and tell you which funeral home to use.

What Arizona law says
Death certificate filing
The funeral establishment or responsible person who takes possession of the remains files the death certificate within seven calendar days, and may file it electronically; the registrar then registers it within 72 hours if it is complete. A disposition-transit permit is needed before final disposition, so ask the funeral home to confirm both. A.R.S. §§ 36-325, 36-326
Ordering death certificates
Certified death certificates come from the Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Vital Records, and some county offices also issue them. Send a copy of your photo ID or have the request notarized, and ask the funeral home how many copies you will need. Where to Write for Vital Records: Arizona
Embalming and refrigeration
Arizona statute allows remains that are not embalmed to be shipped by common carrier in a suitable shipping container, with no 24-hour shipping deadline, so embalming is not a condition of transport. Ask the funeral home in writing for refrigeration instead of embalming, and ask how it will care for the body until the burial or cremation. A.R.S. § 36-326(E)
Objecting to an autopsy
Arizona's medical examiner law leaves the decision to the county medical examiner, and we found no provision that lets a family refuse an autopsy on religious grounds. Call the county medical examiner's office right away to state your objection and ask what options it has. A.R.S. § 11-597
Small estates
Thirty days after a death, a successor can collect personal property by affidavit, without a court case, if all of the person's personal property is worth $200,000 or less. For real property the limit is $300,000 and the wait is six months. Give the affidavit to whoever holds the property. A.R.S. § 14-3971
